India : Five-day handicrafts fair IHGF to seal Rs. 1500cr worth business

The Indian Handicrafts & Gifts Fair (IHGF) spring, 2006, with a strong participation of over 1875 leading exporters, is expected to attract more than 7000 overseas buyers representing importers & wholesalers from 57 countries.

This five day event which opened yesterday, is being held for the first time at the India Expo Centre & Mart in Greater Noida over an area of 80,000 sq. mtrs.

The Fair will provide a wide spectrum of handicrafts diversity of the country, though the focus shall be on lesser-known handicrafts. The fair is expected to make spot orders worth Rs.1500 crores besides giving a major impetus to the efforts of Export Promotion Council Handicrafts (EPCH) on a long-term basis.

The Fair was inaugurated by Shri Kamal Nath, Minister of Commerce & Industry and eminent personalities of Govt. of India, Trade community, foreign correspondents, designers and buyers from abroad remained present then.

The Minister of State for Textiles, Shri EVKS Elangovan, who presided over the function, informed the gathering that in order to boost the credit requirements in this sector, a new scheme for facilitating credit guarantee cover for handicrafts sector has been launched.

Aggressive efforts are under way to create wider awareness amongst both the banking institutions as well as potential beneficiaries.

It is expected that more than Rs.300 crores of credit would flow to this sector in short time.

The product range on display at the IHGF is predominantly gifts, decorative, art-metal ware, wood ware, home utility items, fashion jewellery, fashion accessories like bags, purses etc., hand crafted home textiles and furnishings, clocks, furniture, floor coverings, Christmas and floral decorations, brocade goods, hand printed textiles and scarves etc.
